Agentic AI has moved past the whiteboard phase.

In public conversations, the focus is still on big questions. What is agentic AI? How autonomous should agents be? When will fully autonomous systems arrive?

At the same time, some teams are already operating at a very different level.

Earlier this year, Zeb Evans, CEO of ClickUp, shared that his company runs thousands of internal AI agents alongside its human workforce, with agents created and managed across sales, marketing, support, product, and engineering. Managers, he noted, often oversee more agents than their teams combined, using human-in-the-loop feedback to guide and refine them.

That example can sound extreme. But it points to something important. Agentic AI is no longer hypothetical. It is already embedded in how teams work, even if it is not always visible from the outside.

According to our survey of more than 1,000 developers and product leaders, 64% of product roadmaps now include agentic AI as scheduled, committed work alongside core platform priorities.

In practice, that work shows up as agentic workflows already running in production. Not as headline features or bold bets on full autonomy, but as practical systems quietly handling real work every day.

To understand how teams are actually building, deploying, and trusting these systems, we conducted this research. The result is the 2026 State of Agentic AI report. What the data shows is less dramatic than the hype and far more consequential.

Agentic AI is not being defined by theory. It is being defined by what teams can trust in production.

What agentic AI means in practice

Ask ten teams what “agentic AI” means, and you will likely get ten different answers.

Some describe workflow engines that trigger actions across systems. Others think of autonomous background workers, chat-based assistants, or automated jobs operating with limited context. Even within the same organization, definitions often differ.

This lack of consensus is not a failure. It is a sign of a category still forming.

In emerging technical categories, shared language usually comes after shared behavior. When you look at how teams are actually building, a pattern starts to emerge.

Agentic AI is increasingly defined by systems that can plan, decide, and act across workflows while operating within clear constraints. Not full autonomy. Not simple automation. Something in between that works reliably in real environments.

Agentic AI is already in production

Despite the definitional ambiguity, adoption is not theoretical. 67% of developers and product leaders say their teams are already building or shipping agentic workflows today. Much of this work starts internally. Engineering automation, IT workflows, operational tooling, and internal services dominate early deployments.

These environments allow teams to move quickly, test assumptions, and learn what breaks without putting customer trust at risk. By the time agentic AI appears as a polished customer-facing feature, many organizations already have meaningful production experience behind them.

Public narratives still frame agentic AI as experimental. Inside companies, it already feels routine.

Autonomy is not all or nothing

One of the clearest signals from the data is that full autonomy remains rare.

Only 4% of teams allow agents to act without any human approval. That does not mean agents are not trusted. Most teams are adopting graduated trust models, where low-risk actions are automated and higher-risk decisions still require human oversight.

Teams already trust agents to:

  • Create tickets or tasks
  • Schedule meetings
  • Send internal or external emails
  • Update records across systems

This is how agentic AI actually ships today. Responsibility is delegated incrementally, in production, where trust can be earned, monitored, and revoked based on real outcomes.

The autonomy debate is not wrong. It is just incomplete.

Speed matters more than cost

When teams talk about why they are adopting agentic AI, cost savings are not the primary driver.

Speed is.

69% of developers and product leaders say improving speed and responsiveness is their main reason for adopting agentic AI, ahead of cost reduction. Agentic workflows are being used to reduce coordination overhead and move faster across fragmented systems, not simply to operate more cheaply.

That shift changes how teams evaluate tools and platforms. Reliability, integration coverage, permissions, and observability matter more than flashy demos. If an agent misfires, behaves unpredictably, or breaks silently, any speed gains disappear immediately.

Infrastructure decisions become more strategic as agentic workflows move closer to customer-facing products.

Agentic AI is becoming a switching event

The most consequential finding in the report is not about adoption. It is about buying behavior.

94% of developers and product leaders say they would consider switching SaaS vendors for stronger agentic AI capabilities. Reliability, integrations, and security consistently matter more than novelty or cost when teams think about what would justify a switch.

That is what turns a capability into a market inflection point.

Agentic AI is no longer just something teams are curious about. It is becoming a factor in long-term platform decisions. Once a capability reaches that threshold, categories tend to reshape quickly.

What this means for teams building in 2026

The data points to a few clear conclusions.

Agentic AI will not be defined by how autonomous it sounds. It will be defined by the workflows teams quietly decide they cannot turn off.

The teams that succeed will be the ones that focus on:

  • Shipping trusted workflows incrementally
  • Investing in reliability, permissions, and observability
  • Using internal systems as proving grounds
  • Choosing infrastructure that can support agentic behavior at scale

This shift is already underway, even if it is not always visible yet.
